JEWISH NEWS

ith Chanukah just over
a week away, there is
still ample opportunity
to spend some time at
your favorite bookstore searching for
that special title for family members
and friends. Here are some sugges-
tions to get you started.
Candle #1:
For The
Feminist
The Jewish
Woman's Book of
Wisdom, edited by Ellen Jaffe-Gill
(Birch Lane Press; $14.95), is a
compilation that brings together the
voices of dozens of contemporary
and historical Jewish women of
many different nations, traditions
and lifestyles. Ranging from devoted
17th-century wife Glukel of
Hameln to anarchist Emma
Goldman to contemporary Jewish
writers such as Letty Cottin
Pogrebin, the women whose words
appear in this volume weave a color-
ful tapestry of religious practice,
family relationships, social activism
and faith. Gathered from books,
periodicals and Jaffe-Gill's own
acquaintance with Jewish writers,
scholars and clergy, almost 100
women — from the late Bella
Abzug on saying Kaddish for her
father ("No one could have stopped
me from performing the duty tradi-
tionally reserved for a son, from
honoring the man who had taught
me to love peace, who had educated
me in Jewish values") to talk-show
host Roseanne on her reaction to
learning about the Holocaust ("I am
always at the edge of collapse, in
this world when I think about how
fragile everything is") — share their
defiance, loneliness and joy.
Candle #2: For
The "Trekkie"
Warped Factors: A
Neurotic's Guide to
the Universe, by
Walter Koenig
(Taylor Publishing
Co.; $22.95), is the
author/actor's story of growing up as
the neurotic child of Jewish Russian
immigrants in 1940s Manhattan
through his rise to "Star Trek" fame as
Pavel Chekov, Russian navigator of the
U.S.S. Enterprise, and beyond. From
the show's beginning — "The first
eight weeks at my new job was like
the eight days of Chanukah when a
gift is supposed to be given each day. I
loved the surprise of discovering each
time that I'd be in yet another
episode" — to the lowdown on the
Star Trek cast, movies and conven-
tions, fans will not be disappointed
