years later. His father, a cantor for
nearly 75 years, sang at the Dohany
Synagogue, Europe's largest, and the
new CD includes songs Slomovits
learned from his father. All of the orig-
inal music on the CD, in fact, is influ-
enced by the rich variety of Jewish
music Sandor listened to growing up.
"When I sing, I sound like my
father," he writes. "The timbre, the
quality of my voice, is the same. My
vibrato, the way I approach the high
notes, the cry in my voice that is one
of the signatures of the cantorial style
are all the same as his."
Along with the lead vocals on

Music of My Family, Music of My
People, Slomovits plays guitar and per-

cussion. Joining him are his brother
Laszlo on harmony vocals, fiddle and
mandolin; Brian Brill on piano;
Hachig Kazarian on clarinet; Helen
Slomovits on flute and Abraham Ben-
Ze'ev on accordion.
