ATHENS
SOUvLAKI
She has developed a friendship with
Ivanov, the man who will play her
groom. "He is darling. That makes it
so much easier," she said. I can't wait
until the kissing parts."
Playing an Italian Catholic, this
nice Jewish girl also has to practice
crossing herself. "I keep doing it back-
ward," she said, "but then I haven't
had much practice."
Speaking of practice, the cast will
have to get by with only 10 rehearsals
before the show opens.
"That is unheard of," said Julie
Yolles, who plays caterer Loretta Black.
Yolles, an equity actress whose forays
into the culinary arts have gone only
slightly further than popping a Lender's
bagel into the toaster oven, has only
days to develop a character who will
daily whip up the wedding feast.
We really have to research our
characters because people in the audi-
ence will try to stump us," she said.
"From the cooking standpoint, this is a
very hard stretch for me. If we were
talking about warming up a Lean Cui-
sine or telling you which drive-through
is the fastest, I'd have it nailed."
Sure to nail his performance is
Rabbi Nelson, who has seen the
Chicago production. His one-time
faux officiating gig will include the
lighting of a menorah for Chanukah.
"I told [David Nederlander] that if
they were going to have kosher nights,
they should have a rabbi officiate," he
said, adding that he has never per-
formed a religious wedding ceremony
between anyone but two Jews.
Nelson also hinted that this first
taste of show business could be the
start of a new career. "A lot of people
have been strongly encouraging me to
leave the pulpit," he joked. _
