about what appeared to them
at first as a curse, and which
today they speak of as a bless-

restore a dimension that was
missing from their lives. It
was a spiritual journey back
to Judaism. We cannot avoid
the scars, but ultimately this
is a photograph of hope
because they survived."
As he pictured diversity
among American Jews,
Brenner also was able to look
into his own beliefs.

Son Of Agam
Complementing the Frederic Brenner exhibit is work by photographer
Ron Agam, another artist whose talents developed in France as well as
Israel.
Through his exhibit, "The Wall," Agam illustrates the rituals and reli-
gious moments in daily life.
The son of Israeli artist Yaacov Agam, this artistic photographer attend-
ed yeshivas and studied with professional photographers.
Agam, 40, is descended from opposing Chasidic and Mitnagdim tradi-
tions and can trace his ancestry seven generations to the founder of
Chabad, Rabbi Schneur Zalman. His paternal
grandfather, Yeboshua Gibstein, was a kabbalist
rabbi who devoted his life to religious studies.
In 1994, Agam had his first public exhibition
in New York, where he now lives. It consisted of
30 photos taken at the Western Wall and an ultra-
Orthodox conclave.
Besides being shown in other exhibits, his works
have been featured in books, magazines and news-
papers. ❑
