hen Faye Kellerman
wrote her first suspense
novel 12 years ago, she
never dreamed she
would become a best-selling author.
But 12 books later, with more than a
million copies of her mysteries in
print, she is one of the most popular
female novelists in America.
On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Kellerman
will be the featured speaker at the
opening meeting of the National
Council of Jewish Women-Greater
Detroit Section (NCJW) at Temple
Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield.
She will talk about her work, her
religious background, the Orthodox
characters in her mystery-crime series
and her latest book, Moon Music,
which hit bookstores this summer.
Kellerman's writing career began as a
hobby. Unlike many authors who hold
a degree in English, she was a mathe-
matics major and went on to earn a
doctorate in dentistry at UCLA. But
after a year of practicing dentistry at a
free clinic, she became pregnant with S
her first child and decided to take time
off to be a stay-at-home mom.
"I am sure my fellow dentists are
doing quite well without me," laughs
Kellerman, whose husband of 26 years
is famed mystery-crime author and
clinical psychologist Jonathan Keller-
man. The couple met at a Jewish com-
munity center in 1970 and were mar- &
ried two years later.
Kellerman continued to stay home
as she gave birth to three more chil-
dren (the four Kellerman offspring are
now ages 20, 17, 13 and 6) and spent
the first seven years of motherhood
searching for a creative outlet.
