concluded each review by naming
other films similar to the one being dis-
c cussed. He lists places where hard-to-
find films can be obtained and offers
10 indexes to help readers look up pro-
ductions by favorite directors and writ-
ers, as well as other cinema elements.
"It's my feeling that art can trans-
port us and take us anywhere," says
Wilhelm, who insists that reading sub-
titles become second nature as viewers
watch more and more foreign lan-
guage productions. "Most of the expe-
riences that I have had beyond our
own shores — that have been extraor-
dinary, moving and eye-opening —
have been while I was watching films.
That experience is something I try to
convey to moviegoers who may be a
bit tentative."
The author, who introduces about
80 motion pictures each year to audi-
ences at the Detroit Film Theatre,
learns about new ones by attending
festivals. Recently he was in New
York, where 28 films were shown, and
also traveled to Toronto, where 300
motion pictures were hosted. Previews
keep him informed of trends.
"One of the trends in foreign films
_— and we're seeing it in American
films as well — is committee decision
making," Wilhelm notes. "I think it's
getting harder and harder to distin-
guish the foreign film from the Ameri-
can film in some ways."
Wilhelm believes that just about
every film he has seen — good or bad,
trendy or lasting — can have positive
effects on the viewer.
"My relationship with movies can
be likened to, and is not lesser than,
my relationships with people," he
maintains. "Each film becomes a part
of me, forms part of my memory pat-
tern and affects the way I see the
world. All the films I've seen have con-
tributed to bringing me to this point
in my life.
C.? "I've never recommended that peo-
ple not see a movie because that
would be recommending that they not
have an experience. What I try to tell
people is what it did for me or didn't
do for me and let them make their
own decisions." El
