How many hopes did you nourish
and elevate?
How many sorrows were eased by
your ways?
How many times did you praise and
_appreciate?
Thus do we measure the value of
days.
If you were wrong, were you swift
with apology?
If you were right, were you swifter'
with grace?
Were your acts tasteful, and were they
cD,
appropriate;
Each in its hour, and all in their place?
Did you receive all your fortunes with
gratitude?
Did you judge wisely to govern your
gifts?
Did you remember to share with
humility?
This is the life sustains and uplifts.
Then is this blessing made sweet on
my lips tonight;
Then do my prayers for you flow
with delight.
May the Lord also find favor in how
you've lived,
Granting His mercy and peace
through the night.
Do you know more tonight than you
did yesterday?
Only through learning we rise and
excel.
Did you embrace Faith; not fall on it
in despair?
Only in constancy Faith serves us
well.
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob watch over
you.
My love is yours, Sweetheart, always
to keep.
Now and forever, I pledge you my
vigilance.
This be the vow you take with you to
sleep.
Have you proved worthy of what
you've inherited?
Did you ennoble that legacy, too?
Which of your deeds paid a tribute to
ancestry?
How was your heritage strengthened
by you?

Did you take time for rejoicing and
merriment?
Punctuate life with your laugh and
smile?
Did you treat body and Earth with
due reverence?
Only in this is existence worthwhile.
My grandmother, of blessed memory,
told me this story about her grandfa-
ther. They lived in the little town of
Mir, which was in Russia.
Each day, just before daybreak,
her grandfather would leave the
house. No one knew where he went.
One day, he was followed and, it was
told, that he went to the forest to
chop fire wood. He then distributed
it to the poor widows with large
