Detroit Jewish News

Not many people know the riveting
story of Eli Cohen, the Israeli spy who
penetrated the Syrian high command,
but that may change thanks to a Web
site created at the behest of Cohen's
family.
This no-frills site includes all the
basics about Cohen's life and deeds,
including information about his pub-
lic execution in Damascus in 1965.
We see Cohen from several perspec-
tives. His wife expresses anger over the

way the Mossad has forgotten his
heroics; his brother reveals how he,
too, worked for the Israeli spymasters
— and decoded messages from an
unknown spy who later turned out to
be his brother. He also argues that Eli's
spying provided information that
helped Israel to win the Six-Day War.
The site also includes the text of a
play about Cohen, produced by Israel
Theater Productions. And there's an odd
little spy game; play along and you'll
learn still more about Cohen's activities.
There's also a photo album docu-
menting Cohen's life and a quiz.
Answer_ a series of questions about
Cohen's shadowy exploits, and you
could win a trip to a location "not clos-
er than 4,500 miles from New York."

But promoters of the site want to
do more than simply tell Cohen's
story. They have included an, online
petition to Syrian President Hafez
Assad, asking him to return Cohen's
body to Israel as a humanitarian ges-
ture. Fill in the blanks and add your
own name to the appeal.
The site is densely packed and no' 4
too hard to navigate, although the
typeface on the home page is uncom-
fortably small. It's not the flashiest
home page around, but it tells the
story with efficiency.

Seen On The Net

Airborne

The Israel Air Force has a great new
site. The graphics are gorgeous, the
information is voluminous — but it's
all in Hebrew. And in an era of super-
sonic jets, this site is as slow as a DC-
3. Still, it's worth checking out at:

Think Pink

Borscht; you either love it or think
it's best used as paint remover, and
you sure as heck can't remember how
to spell it. Read an informative, inter-
esting essay on this so-called food by__,
kosher cookbook author Rosalyn F.'4
Manesee on the Jewish Communica-
tion Network at: jcnl8.com. There
also are recipes, if you're interested.

Beijing Knishes?

Want to know more about Beijing's
Jewish population? Check out the
community's home page gorpbroth
ers.com/sinogogue/ for a fascinating
glimpse of this tiny, but apparently
very active, Jewish community. Not a
big site, and no pics, unfortunately.
But there's some interesting informa-
tion.
