In a recent evaluation of the Agency
for Jewish Education's services, the teen
department — along with many other
AJE programs — did not fare well. But
with several new projects on the hori-
zon and the rekindling
of a lapsed program,
the unit appears to be
making an effort to
improve its services to
Jewish youth groups.
Youth group profession-
als are pleased, but
somewhat guarded in
their praise for the new
services.
The evaluation, con-
ducted in May by the
Jewish Education Service of North
America at the request of AJE and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, found local educators and
youth group leaders "confused about
the goals and role of AJE in this area"
and reported that "relationships with
youth organizations are limited."
It also revealed that many respon-
dents were disappointed that the
Kornwise Weekend — a community-
wide retreat for teens — had not been
offered in years. The evaluation found
that most respondents wanted the AJE
to serve as a clearinghouse for profes-
sional development, curricula and edu-
cational materials.
In response, the AJE recently circu-
lated a glossy brochure for the
Kornwise Weekend, which will be held
in December, and distributed "teen
program survival kits" to youth group
leaders, rabbis and synagogue high
school coordinators.
The kits — file boxes
containing 50 cards
that list resources, pro-
gram ideas and discus-
sion topics — will be
updated each month
with 15 to 20 new
cards, said Teen Services
Coordinator Jeff Lazar.
Lazar, who has been
with the AJE for a year,
created the cards, using
information culled
from the AJE's resource center and
from some youth groups. He said he
would provide further information or
materials on any topic in the cards
within 24 hours if a group leader asks
for it.
"A lot of youth advisors are working
full-time jobs and doing this on the
side," he said. "One of the beauties of
this is they can call me if they need a
program.
In addition to Kornwise and the
"survival kit," the AJE is refining its
