sional elections, thanks to projections
that disgusted voters will stay home in
droves, but leaders of the National
Jewish Democratic Council say their
big event honoring Jewish members of
Congress last week was a rousing suc-
cess.
The group gave a special award to
Rep. Sidney Yates (D-Ill.), the dean of
the Jewish delegation in the House.
Yates, who is retiring this year, was
unable to attend because of ill health.
The lawmaker came to Capitol Hill
when Harry Truman was president.
The partisan group gave its Hubert
H. Humphrey Humanitarian Award
to the Jewish Democratic members of
the House. Fifteen showed up for the
event and the awards ceremony —
although beepers kept calling them
back to the Capitol for votes.
Etrog Crisis Passes
The Great Etrog Crisis is over, at least
for thisyear's holiday season, thanks
to persistent intervention by Agudath
Israel of America.
The problem? The fruit, an integral
part of the Sukkot celebration, is also
a favorite of Mediterranean fruit flies.
Last year, Jewish travelers passing
through Canada had their etrogim
confiscated by overzealous U.S. cus-
toms inspectors.
According to Abba Cohen, Agu-
dah's Washington representative, the
problem was that the inspectors work-
ing at the Toronto airport weren't
backed up by the more enlightened
representatives of the Department of
Agriculture, as they are at many U.S.
airports. So they simply went by the
rule book and confiscated the strange
fruit.
Mr. Cohen appealed to Agriculture
Secretary Dan Glickman, who wrote
back acknowledging the problem and
apologizing for "any distress the situa-
tion caused" for Jewish travelers.
The result? Last month, the depart-
ment sent out a directive that etrogim
be allowed through — a ruling that
presumably also will guide the behav-
ior of customs inspectors in Toronto.
The ruling applies only for the
Sukkot period, and for this year only.
And all fruit must carry a certificate
from the Israeli government. Israel is
the primary source of etrogim.
"What we're doing now is inform-
ing etrog merchants and brokers to
make sure the phyto-sanitary certifi-
cate is available for buyers," Mr.
Cohen said. "We will then monitor
the situation this year to see if this is a
workable solution."
