ball soup ... 150 gallons of soup are
sold weekly in the four stores.
All have its own raw juice bar with
freshly squeezed vegetables and fruits.
Those award-winning sandwiches
at Amer's have become known for
both goodness and size ... The corned
beef and pastrami, for example, are no
four- or five-ouncers as sold at most
delis ... but expertly cut and juicy six-
ouncers In October, it will cook its
own turkeys at each location ... To
those who love turkey, there is not
much better than slices cut fresh off
the bird ... Amer's makes its own
chopped liver, Russian dressing, cole
slaw, potato salad, brisket of beef, etc.
Amer's fifth restaurant, slated to
open soon in Ann Arbor, will be called
Amer's First Street Grill ... with full
waitperson service day and night,
liquor license, steaks, pasta, seafood,
chicken, salads, etc. ... plus swing, jazz
and blues rhythms ... Open 364 days
(no Christmas), from 11 a.m. to 2
a.m.
Ann Arbor may be a small town ...
80,000 population regularly, and
125,000 when school opens ... but is a
tough market to crack ... If a restau-
rant doesn't make it in the first six
months, closing usually happens.
Amer's keeps growing ... The little
place in Flint that the banks refused to
gamble on has grown into a four-
restaurant operation that presently
employs about 200 ... And No. 5 is
soon to come.
What Amer has done proves that
you don't need a restaurant back-
ground to run an eatery ... It helps,
but not if the one integral thing is
missing ... Common sense will win
out much of the time.
HER SCHEDULED regular
appearances on television will come as
no surprise.
When Jill Davidson Sklar was a
full-time writer at The Jewish News,
predictions were high that one day she
would be in front of the TV cameras.
Now, as one of three contributing
editors doing special assignment on
food and food products for the soon-
to-be-seen cable show, "Everything's
Kosher," Jill will be viewed nationally
after its local debut.
She was one of 60 who tried out
for the job ... And when co-producer
Mort Meisner called, Jill thought it-
was to tell her softly that she had been
rejected, instead of it being done by
mail.
After all, wasn't it back in the third
grade when about 8 or 9 years old,
that Jill ran off the school stage cry-
