Then, 2 1/2 years ago, Koppelman,
who'd always loved playing cards, first
visited the kind of poker netherworld
portrayed in Rounders and was
hooked. Leaving in the wee morning
hours, he immediately called David
Levien, telling him he'd seen the mak-
ings of a great screenplay.
"Then we started infiltrating as
players," explained Levien. The duo,
whose own poker skills increased with
their "research," filled their script with
the slang individual to rounders, slid-
ing in such colorful phrases as "alliga-
tor blood" (a compliment to a player
unfazed by intense pressure) and "fin-
ger up your spine" (the sign that a
player's been caught cheating and
should exit the game).

Levien and
Koppelman have
been best friends
since their teens.

"We always felt the best movies
have a lexicon of their own," said
Koppelman, adding that the slang is
also a matter of authenticity.
"These people do talk like this. If
you're going to show this world, and
use this world as a backdrop for a
story of loyalty and friendship, we just
wanted you to believe that this world
existed."
Levien and Koppelman have estab-
lished a burgeoning career of their
own from Rounders, whose script is
being published (and was excerpted in
the Esquire summer fiction issue).
Levien's novel, Wormwood, is also set
to hit bookstores next April.
Next up for them is the the gang-
ster film Knock Around Guys, which
they're also directing.
But if there's one thing they want
audiences to glean from their first
film, it's the distinction between a
gambler, who believes in luck, and a
rounder.
"[Rounders] have an amalgamation
of skills that enable them to under-
stand the mathematical odds at any
moment," explained Koppelman, "to
understand what they should do, and
most importantly to understand what
you are going to do."
"And how to make you do what
they want you to do," concluded
Levien, finishing his thought. 7
