The Agency for Jewish Education-
Midrasha will hold a open house for

Metro Hillel
Welcomes Students

Hillel of Metro Detroit is active on sev-
eral campuses throughout the Metro
Detroit area.
At Wayne State University, open
houses will be Tuesday, Sept. 8;
Wednesday, Sept. 9; and Thursday,
Sept. 10, in the HMD lounge, 667
Student Center Building.
At Oakland University, welcome
table will be up Tuesday, Sept. 15, 11
a.m.-1 p.m. in the Oakland Center.
At Oakland Community College,
welcome tables will be Wednesdays,
Sept. 9 and 16, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in J-
Building, across from the bookstore.
Hillel of Metro Detroit will host
"Around the World — A Taste of
HMD" 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17
at the Allen House, 556 West Maple
Road in Birmingham. The program
will feature food samples from different

Buddhism
And Judaism

"What I Learned From Buddism That
Can Help Save Judaism" will be the
first of a three-part series, "Judaism
Faces East." The lecture will take place
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Kahn
Jewish Community Center.
Guest speaker Rabbi Alan Lew is the
spiritual leader of Congregation Beth
Sholom in San Francisco. Before enter-
ing rabbinical school in 1982, he was a
serious student of Zen Buddhism,
served as director of the Berkeley Zen
Center, and resided at a Zen
monastery. Currently, he has a strong
interest in exploring the use of Zen
meditation in enhancing Jewish spiritu-
ality.
The series is sponsored by the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit, The Detroit Jewish News and
Temple Israel. Admission for this event
will be $5 for JCC and Temple Israel
members; $8 for non-members.
