And Judaism

"What I Learned From Buddism That
Can Help Save Judaism" will be the
first of a three-part series, "Judaism
Faces East." The lecture will take place
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Kahn
Jewish Community Center.
Guest speaker Rabbi Alan Lew is the
spiritual leader of Congregation Beth
Sholom in San Francisco. Before enter-
ing rabbinical school in 1982, he was a
serious student of Zen Buddhism,
served as director of the Berkeley Zen
Center, and resided at a Zen
monastery. Currently, he has a strong
interest in exploring the use of Zen
meditation in enhancing Jewish spiritu-
ality.
The series is sponsored by the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit, The Detroit Jewish News and
Temple Israel. Admission for this event
will be $5 for JCC and Temple Israel
members; $8 for non-members.
