Yad Ezra Rosh Hashanah Greeting Cards for Sale

"What I Learned From Buddism That
Can Help Save Judaism" will be the
first of a three-part series, "Judaism
Faces East." The lecture will take place
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the
Kahn Jewish Community Center.
Guest speaker Rabbi Alan Lew is the
spiritual leader of Congregation Beth
Sholom in San Francisco. Before enter-
ing rabbinical school in 1982, he was a
serious student of Zen Buddhism,
served as director of the Berkeley Zen
Center, and resided at a Zen monastery.
Currently, he has a strong interest in
exploring the use of Zen meditation in
enhancing Jewish spirituality.
The series is sponsored by the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit, The Detroit
Jewish News and Temple Israel.
Admission for this event will be $5 for
JCC and Temple Israel members; $8
for non-members.

Winners of the COJES and Detroit
Jewish News sponsored creative writing
contest, "My Keys to Well Being," will
be announced at the Commission on
Jewish Eldercare Services (COJES)
community education day 1-4 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Kahn Jewish
Community Center.
Dr. Kenneth Minaker of Harvard
Medical School, a specialist in geron-
tology with a special interest in well-
ness in older adults, will be the guest
speaker. Dr. Minaker is associate pro-
fessor of medicine at Harvard Medical
School and chief of the Geriatric
Medicine Unit at Massachusetts
General Hospital.
The day will feature exhibits of
interest to older adults and their care-
givers and entertainment by the Sam
Barnett Orchestra. Filmmaker Sue
Marx will introduce her Academy
Award-winning film Young At Heart.
Refreshments will be served, and
there will be door prizes. A sign lan-
guage interpreter will be available.
