Congregation Shir Tikvah's Adult
Education Program will host a porluc
dinner and learn discussion on
"Personal Prayer" 6:30 p.m. Friday,
Sept. 18. This month's discussion will
have a guest speaker, Chazan Eli
Cohen who hails from California but
joins Shir Tikvah for the High
Holidays as its cantor.
The discussions generally last 1 1/2
hours and are open to the public.
Anyone wishing to attend is asked to
bring a dish to share. Questions about
the evening or the adult education

The Jewish Genealogical Society of
Michigan will start the 1998-99 sea-
son 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, with a
trip to the Elmwood Cemetery in
Detroit, where the first Jewish ceme-
tery in Michigan is located.
The day will start at Temple Beth
El. Buses will go to Elmwood where
its managing director, historian/tour
guide, Chancey Miller will join.
There will be a $15 charge for JGS
members and $20 for non-members
to cover the bus ride and box lunch.

Balfour Concert
Congregation Shir Tikvah will host a
new series titled "Jewish Spirituality:
Our Sages Speak" 12:15 p.m. every
Monday. Modeled after a lunch and
learn format, the discussions will rep-
resent a liberal approach to the study
of pre-modern Jewish texts through
active learning.
Sessions will take place in the con-
gregation's new facility, 3900
Northfield Parkway (south of Wattles
between Crooks and Coolidge) in
Troy. Lunch will be available for pur-
chase or participants may "brown bag"
it. There will be no charge to partici-

Ice Cream
Social Planned
The Friends and Family Society of
Jewish Apartments and Services will
host a free, community ice cream
social and concert 1-3 p.m. Sunday,
Aug. 30, at the Eleanor Butzel Simon
Park adjacent to the Prentis Jewish
Apartments in Oak Park.
The event will honor all donors
who have. made a contribution to the
Friends and Family Society, which is
made up of community members who
wish to help improve the quality of
life of elderly living in the JAS build-
ings located in Oak Park and West
Bloomfield. The society helps to raise
funds that JAS uses to pay for cultural
and social activities for JAS elderly.
