Get In Shape
For Skiing

lanning to hit the slopes
this winter? Better get in
shape if you want to pre-
vent an injury.
"Before you entertain thoughts of
skiing, you should make sure you are
in good physical condition," says Dr.
John McShane, director of primary
care sports medicine at Thomas Jef-
ferson University Hospital in
Philadelphia.
Common skiing injuries include
sprains, fractures and torn ligaments
in the arms and !egs. Shoulders also
are vulnerable in a fall, and "skier's
thumb" occurs when the ligament
that runs along the inner side of the
thumb is torn (as when a the pole is
pulled away in a fall). McShane says
smart conditioning and common
sense will reduce the risk of injury.
A pre-skiing exercise program
should include cardiovascular train-
ing, such as running, cycling or
swimming, plus weight training to
tone muscles. Lunges, squats, leg
presses and hamstring curls will
whip legs into shape.
"Skiing is very tiring on the legs,"
says McShane. "If your legs are not
conditioned before you ski, they will
be much more susceptible to fatigue
and injury."
Once you're out on the slopes,
exercise a little caution. Know your
limitations, McShane warns, and
never ski when you're tired, intoxi-
cated or alone. Also avoid schussing
in uncharted snow.

Too Much Juice
Hurts Teeth

L

ots of children drink fruit
juice, but the Academy of
General Dentistry warns
that too much juice could
damage the enamel of a child's teeth.
AGD researchers analyzed 532
juices to determine how much fluo-
ride they contained and discovered
that more than half the juices had
more fluoride than recommended.
"The problem with fluoride is
that sometimes you could have too
much of a good thing," says William
Chase, DDS. "The correct amount
of fluoride can prevent cavities, but
too much fluoride can lead to fluo-
rosis, which causes damage to the
enamel and even decay."
