LETTERS
in relation to Hitler's pronouncements
(Rubin's disclaimer notwithstanding).
The Jewish Diaspora, itself shrinking
in numbers, cannot afford the extermi-
nation of another 6 million.
Even Israeli Arabs, those given the
kind of recognition that has brought
them into the Israeli Knesset, are open-
ly expressing views indicating they do
not accept Israel's existence. Arab jour-
nalists in the PA-sponsored press are
C\
claiming that biblical history has no
basis in fact, even the Holocaust. The
latter statement has given organized
American Jewry some pause. The Con-
ference of Presidents of Major Ameri-
can Jewish Organizations has called
upon Yassir Arafat to take action
against those responsible for the publi-
cation of the Holocaust-denying article.
Their letter to him indicated their
belief that "there can be little hope for
reconciliation if people, especially the
youth, are subject to constant indoctri-
nation portraying their neighbors in
such vile ways."
Lenny Ben-David's article ("The
Battle For Jerusalem" July 24) clearly
points out that Arab protests regarding
provocation by Israelis can be mere
smoke screens designed to enlist United <
States and European community sup-
port. He also mentions the PA's aggres-
sive campaign in the U.N. to strip
away Israel's sovereignty over Jerusalem.
Furthermore, Israeli Arabs have recent-
ly indicated they will undertake politi-
cal action in that direction.
Jews brought up on the concept of
tikkun olam — repairing the world —
may be stuck in the long-held notion
that Arabs and Jews can live peaceably
together. In a truly civilized, non-vio-
lent and democratic environment, that
could be possible. But until Palestinians
truly accept the concept of living sided-
by-side peaceably with Israelis, the
Israeli government must proceed with
caution.
Moreover, Jerusalem, the everlasting <
symbol of our unique covenant, must
remain in Israeli hands. This covenant
carried a message so profound that it
has, as Thomas Cahill postulates in his
book The Gifts of the Jews, resonated
all over planet earth. His thesis that it
was this covenant that contributed
toward developing democracy on
planet Earth and hence more peace
and harmony in the world suggests
that symbols are crucial to the civiliz-
ing of humankind. For this symbol to
be kept resonating, it must remain
Jewish and undivided.
