bosses so it is always a pleasure,"
Carlini said. "Besides, we have a great
group of people here. Everyone got
along fantastically."
While negotiations with insurance
companies dragged on three months
longer than expected, Selik kept faith
that he would reopen. He ordered an
expanded line of furniture in January
and installed samples in Hillside's new
digs in late April. New computers and
phones came later and the finishing
touches — new paint, carpet and light
fixtures — were in place for the store
to reopen in early June. Hundreds
turned out for_the gala event, mostly
to offer their congratulations, Selik
said.
"I am not Art Van, I am not
Gardner-White, I am not Scott
Shuptrine and I am not Gorman's," he
said of his larger, better-known com-
petitors. He admits he was discour-
aged at times when he was trying to
pick up the pieces from the disaster.
He also remembers a lesson his moth-
er taught him years ago:
"She used to always say, 'There is a
good to come out of everything if you
can find it.'
"She was right."

,116,

A lot of women are so afraid of
breast cancer they don't want to
hear about it.
And that's what frightens me.
Because those women won't
practice breast self-examination
regularly.
Those women, particularly
those over 35, won't ask their doc-
tor about a mammogram.
Yet that's what's required for
breast cancer to be detected
early. When the cure rate is 90%.
And when there's a good chance
it won't involve the loss of a
breast.
But no matter what it involves,
take it from someone who's been
through it all.
Life is just too wonderful to
give up on. And, as I found out,
you don't have to give up on any
of it. Not work, not play, not even
romance.
Oh, there is one thing, though.
You do have to give up being
afraid to take care of yourself.
