"There was no way I was going to
put 3,000 employees out on the
street," Feuerstein recently told a
group of business students. "I was not
going to put a nail in the coffin. The
decision to rebuild was both a human
and a business decision."
Selik said he was unaware of the
Malden Mills episode, but considers
his employees family and the
Bloomfield Hills location home.
"Besides having the Selik family to
take care of, I have the Hillside family
to take care of. They have been with
me for a long time," he said. His
employees have an average of five years
with Hillside.
Janet Carlini, a designer who has
worked at the store for eight years,
didn't blink when Selik made his offer

Carlini said the slower customer
traffic allowed her time to work on
past projects and spend more time
with new customers.
"I had plenty of work to do.
(Having a lighter customer flow) gave
me more time to focus on my work."
And despite fewer customers and
cramped, less-than-ideal working con-
ditions, the staff persevered. "You have
to understand. This is a wonderful
place to work. I have two fantastic
