ell together," Stein said.
The team is looking forward to
continuing their rivalry with Los
Angeles after losing to them in the
final last year.
"The common denominator
between the kids was that every one
wanted to have a great time, spend
some time with Jewish kids from all
giver the world, and win the gold
medal," Stein said.
The 13-14 year old baseball play-
ers have been split up into two teams
coached by Mark Rosenberg, Bruce
Kaczander, Michael Surnow, and
David Disner.
Last summer, in their first year
of coaching Maccabi, Rosenberg
\ and Kaczander took a group of 13-
--) -ear-olds to Pittsburgh and placed
third behind Los Angeles and Pitts-
burgh.
"We've got a lot of players who are
14-year-olds, who have a lot of expe-
rience, said Rosenberg. "Last year,
they felt intimidated because they all
were first-year players."
Kaczander says that one year makes
,a difference. 'All of our kids this year
( are a lot bigger and stronger and
throw the ball a lot harder," he said.
"I think we are going to be really
competitive this year," Kaczander
said. "We have two strong teams
which we are excited about and I
know the kids are really pumped up
too."
Similarly, the Detroit softball team
\ has been split up into two squads and
• is looking to improve on its record
from last year with two teams that are
more experienced and talented.
"We have so many kids that can
play so many different positions,"
said second-year coach Marty Gold.
"Eleven of the 12 kids played high
school ball and they've all played
tournament ball."
The team is looking to be more
competitive in the medal rounds this
year with an improved pitching staff,
more aggressive hitting, and leader-
ship from their six veteran players.
"Were looking to be far more
competitive then we have been in the
past and advance to the medal
round," said Gold. "I expect that they
will have a great time, learn more
\- .1',bout the game from when they start-
ed and compete." ❑

100 backstroke. Swimmers needed to
finish in the top three to make the
cut.
While this is Joyce's first trip to the
event, to be held next year in Orlan-
do, Fla., Sid participated in the 1997
Senior Olympics in Tuscon, Ariz.
