Ilf
erb Bernstein, wearing at
covered with Maccabi
pins, looked up at all of
the Maccabi t-shirts that
decorate the balcony in the lobby of
the Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
"So how many of those shirts do
you have?" a staff member standing
next to him asked.
"Not all of them, but most of
them," he replied. "They should burn
that Cleveland shirt from '94. It was
so ugly."
The 16 years of coaching experi-
ence that brought him every Maccabi
t-shirt and pin will, Bernstein says,
give the Detroit swim team a definite
advantage in the upcoming Maccabi
Games Aug. 16-23 in Detroit.
The team has 15 returning swim-
mers from last summer's Games in
Pittsburgh, where they swept the
competition, winning over 50 medals.
They took 11 medals in the 12 relays,
nine of them gold.
"The competition is going to be
very high and we have great swim-
mers that will compete on that level,"
Bernstein said. "We have been build-
ing and getting stronger every year
since 1990 when they inserted the
relays."
Despite the Maccabi swim pro-
gram's powerhouse status in the 90's,
Bernstein has kept his team level-
headed and has always reminded
them what the Games are about.
"I want them to have a good time
and to enjoy themselves," he said. If a
kid has a bad day I want him to come
out of the pool and I want him to
know 'her, there's always tomorrow.'"
Bernstein has the resources to find
out the times of all of the swimmers
from other teams because Detroit in
the host city. That may give him the
advantage in picking his relay teams
and placing his swimmers into indi-
vidual events.
While the swimmers are splashing,
other Detroit-area athletes will be
mining for gold in a drier venue, the
baseball diamond.
Maccabi baseball coaches Marty
Stein, Jesse Polan, and David Levine
say their 15- and 16-year-old team
will turn in a strong performance.
They even make jokes about it.
"As soon as we find that 6-foot-7 AO
left hander who throws in the 90s, we
are going to have a really good pitch-
ing staff," said Stein.
The core of the team and the
coaching staff has worked together for
four years, winning two silver medals
in that span.
"The chemistry is really good and
once we get enough practices under
our belt, I think we will really play 1.0
