JEWISH FEDERATION OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT

Notice is hereby given that the Annual Meeting of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit will take place on Monday, September 28, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Israel,

West Bloomfield, Michigan.

`,IA- at-scale compositions on historic
20th-century themes, and there will
be some 300 people on stage produc-
ing "a big sound. The New York
Philharmonic's Kurt Masur will con-
duct.
During Lincoln Center's three-week
'98 Festival, a total of 36 events and
111 performances will be featured.
Three of Lincoln Center's resident
• mpanies — the New York
Philharmonic, the Lincoln Center
Theater and the Film Society of
Lincoln Center — will join with other
national companies and artists.
In addition to celebrating Israel's
50th anniversary, other noteworthy
performances include All Our
Yesterdays, a performance of the
Hamburg Ballet set to the music of
ustav Mahler; Romeo and Juliet, per-
formed by the Stuttgart Ballet; The
Peony Pavilion, an opera directed by
Chen Shi-Zheng and performed by
the musicians and actors of the
Shanghai Kunju Opera Company;
Patience e– Sarah, a fully staged folk
opera set in the 19th century about
two women who fall in love; a Lincoln
Center Theater production of
"Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, directed
by Nicholas Hytner; Faust 3.0, a
deconstruction of Goethe's universal
tale performed by La Fura dels Baus,
an avant garde theater group from
Barcelona; and the New York Video
Festival. ❑

Petition Candidates: Other persons may be nominated for membership on the Board of
Governors by petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Jewish

prior to the date of the Annual Meeting. Only one person may be nominated in each peti-
tion, and no nominations shall be valid unless the nominee shall have consented to be a
candidate in writing either in the petition or in a separate written document filed with the
Executive Vice-President not less than forty-five (45) days prior to the date of the
Annual Meeting.

specifically for the 50th anniversary of
the Israel Philharmonic.
"We also will be doing a Bernstein
piece called Halleo, the Hebrew word
for flute, which was written in memo-
ry of an Israeli soldier and flautist who
was
killed as a teenager."

Jamie Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein's
daughter, says that honoring her father
along with Israel is especially meaning-
ful to her family.
"My father was very much on the
scene when Israel was coming into
existence," she recalls. "He had the
