The United Way Com-
munity Services has allocated
$776,995 to Jewish Family Service,
the same amount as last year.
The United Way also gave Jewish
Vocational Service $447,269, slated
for career development and employ-
ment services, services for the disabled
and the school-to-work program,
which develops employability skills in
high school students.

After searching three months for an
education director, Congregation
B'nai Moshe has opted for a tempo-
rary arrangement.
The West Bloomfield synagogue
recently hired Nathaniel Berman of
Southfield to serve as program admin-
istrator/youth director under the
supervision of Cantor Earl Berris,
who will oversee the religious school.
A 1997 graduate of Wayne State

voted along party lines last week on a
bill to raise the price of cigarettes by
over $1 a pack.
Sen. Carl Levin, a Democrat, voted
for the tobacco bill; Sen: Spencer
Abraham voted against.
According to the newspaper USA
Today, both senators have received
campaign contributions from tobacco
companies since 1993. Levin received
just over
$4,000; Abra-
ham received
just over
$30,000.

JARC's Social Action Committee:
A "Point of Light."

The Social

mittee of the
Jewish Associ-
ation for Resi-
dential Care
(JARC) was
named a Daily
Point of Light
recipient June
18 by The
Points of Light
Foundation,
the Knights of
Columbus and
the Corpora-
tion for
National Ser-
vice.
The corn-
mittee is corn-

prised of people who have develop-
mental disabilities. They work in vari-
ous settings, including nursing homes,
and assist non-profit agencies in food
packaging projects, repairing and
painting homes in the inner city and
sending care packages to U.S.' troops
in Bosnia.

The Northwest Child,Rescue Women
are still going strong. Last week, the
group celebrated its 50th anniversary
with a luncheon at Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue.
NCRW raises money for the special
needs program at the JCC, battered
women who take shelter at Haven,
programs in Israel and the Dyslexia
Foundation, according to member
Helen Rice. This year, the group gave
the JCC $20,000.

The Anti-Defamation League has a
new way of tracking important and
ordinary dates.
Its 1998-99 Memo and Date Book
offers a "calendar of understanding"
that highlights religious and cultural
observances of Jews, Christians, Mus-
lims, Buddhists, &hal, Shinto and
other religious groups and includes
humanitarian quotations. The book
also includes recommended education-
al materials from the ADL.

were honored with the first copies of

A Palestinian was arrested in
Athens for trying to smuggle arms
and explosives aboard a car ferry sail-
ing to Israel.
Harmony Chapter Women's Amer-
ican ORT sponsored a fun day at

Jacqueline Tichik of Oak Park was
a contestant in the Miss Michigan
United Beauty Pageant.

A U.S. firm and the State of Israel are

to begin pumping 70,000 barrels of
oil a day from wells in the Sinai.
President Carter's evangelist sister,
Ruth Carter Stapleton, cancelled an
appearance before a group devoted to
proselytizing Jews.
Rabbi Ernst J. Conrad was elected
vice president of the Rabbinical Corn-
mission of Metropolitan Detroit.
Irene Rodman was installed as
president of the Primrose Benevolent
Club,

1968

Mr. and Mrs. Philip Slomovitz were
guests of Israel President Shazar at his
home in Jerusalem following sessions
of the 27th World Zionist Congress.
The Jewish Theological Seminary
of America acquired the personal files
of Bernard G. Richards, founder and
director of the Jewish Information
Bureau.
The l3erdichev-Keshenev Aid Soci-

ety honored Jacob Resnick on his
80th birthday.
Mrs. Lee Franklin Weinstock filed
for election as state representative
from the 15th district.
Cindy Kaufman of Gottlieb BBG
was accepted as a participant in the
1968 summer program in Israel.

1958

William Jacob, Detroit-born escaped
convict, was released in Tel Aviv on
bail of 10,000 Israeli pounds and was
awaiting deportation.
Muslim extremists threatened to
blow up the Jewish quarter in Beirut.
A booklet listing 29 leading East
German leaders who were once
prominent Nazis was published in
Berlin.
Abner A. Wolf Inc, wholesale gro
cers, was named Employer of the Year
by Jewish Vocational Service.
Dr. Mel J. Ravitz, assistant profes-

sor of sociology at Wayne State Uni-
versity, will direct the WSU Summer
Human Relations Workshop.

1948

Albert Plotkin of South Bend, Ind.,
believed to be the first alumnus of
Notre Dame to become a rabbi, was
ordained on his graduation from
Hebrew Union College.
Golda Meyerson, American-born
member of the Provisional Govern-
ment of Israd and the only woman
on that body, was named Israel's first
minister to the USSR.
B. H. Kleinman of Detroit was
one of 12 Jewish members of the
graduating class of the U.S. Naval
Academy.
Abbe A. Levi was elected president
of Young Israel of Detroit.
The Julius Rosenwald Auxiliary of
the American Legion presented a flag
to Norvelle School.
