he Detroit Jewish News cap-
tured four first-place awards
and two second-place hon-
ors in the American Jewish
Press Association's 1997 Simon
Rockower Awards for Excellence in
Jewish Journalism.
The Southfield-based news-
magazine took first place for:
* Excellence in Overall Graphic
Design.
* The David Frank Award for
Excellence In Personality Profiles,
"This Boy's Life," by Elizabeth
Applebaum, who profiled Chaya Leah
Tinman.
* The Boris Smolar Award for
Excellence in Comprehensive
Coverage or Investigative Reporting,
"Is Cleanliness Next to Godliness?" by
Jill Davidson Sklar, who examined the
health standards observed by local
kosher establishments, the history of
Detroit's kosher community, the certi-
fication and inspection procedures and
the future of kosher businesses in
Detroit.
* Excellence in Photography,
"Making A Splash," by Daniel Lippitt,
who photographed Jeff Stone, a high
school swimmer with disabilities.
The Jewish News placed second for:
* Excellence in Feature Writing,
"Controlling the Pain," by Phil Jacobs,
who explored the concept of the
Jewish hospice in Michigan.
* Excellence in Special Sections or
Supplements, "Definitive Dating," by
Lynne Meredith Cohn, who offered a
closeup look at modern Jewish dating
as part The Jewish News' The Scene
section.
"The awards signify The Jewish
News' unswerving commitment to
excellence at all levels of journalism,"
said Robert Sklar, editor. "We're very

Awards in the 17th annual compe-
tition were presented at AJPA's annual
conference June 18 in Cleveland.
The Jewish News, part of
Waterspout Communications, corn-
peted in the "Newspapers Over
15,000 Circulation" category.
Other Waterspout winners included
the Baltimore Jewish Times, which won
five Rockowers in the same circulation
class, including a first place for
Excellence in Feature Writing. The
Atlanta Jewish Times earned a first
place for Excellence in Overall
Graphic Design among newspapers
under 15,000 circulation. ❑
