HANNAH
SENESH
Hannah Senesh was 17 when she became a Zionist in
1938. Born in Hungary, she moved to pre-State Israel,
where she worked on a kibbutz. When World War II
broke out, Senesh volunteered for a secret mission to
save Jews in her homeland. With the support of the
British military (outfit pictured here) she parachuted into
Yugoslavia, then crossed into Nazi territory where she
was captured and killed. Her poem "Blessed is the
Match" is recited by children throughout Israel.
