Born in Hungary, she moved to pre-State Israel, where she worked on a kibbutz. When World War II broke out, Senesh volunteered for a secret mission to save Jews in her homeland. With the support of the British military (outfit pictured here) she parachuted into Yugoslavia, then crossed into Nazi territory where she was captured and killed. Her poem "Blessed is the Match" is recited by children throughout Israel.
