New York (JTA) — Alfred Kazin, one
of a group of New York critics and
thinkers who helped shape intellectual
life in this century, has died at the age
of 83.
Kazin wrote about American litera-
ture in several books, including On
Native Grounds. In A Walker in the
he wrote about his immigrant Jewish
childhood in Brooklyn. Kazin said his
parents instilled in him "quaint old-
fashioned socialism" and the "historic
Jewish effort to realize the kingdom of
God in this world."
