Alfred Kazin Dead At 83 4rb New York (JTA) — Alfred Kazin, one of a group of New York critics and thinkers who helped shape intellectual life in this century, has died at the age of 83. Kazin wrote about American litera- ture in several books, including On Native Grounds. In A Walker in the he wrote about his immigrant Jewish childhood in Brooklyn. Kazin said his parents instilled in him "quaint old- fashioned socialism" and the "historic Jewish effort to realize the kingdom of God in this world."
