I turned on the television and one of
my old movies came on. I was watch-
ing my old movie and trying to
remember which one it was, thinking,
I don't remember this movie. Then I
looked again and realized, that wasn't
me, it was you!'
"I see a lot of similarities. One of the
nice things about having success in your
own right is that you're freer and able to
use that gene pool on your father's side
that allows you to have similar expres-
sions and gestures. Earlier on, when
you're first starting out, in an effort to
establish your own identity, you almost
have to consciously censor yourself from
that. Then things work out and you feel
more comfortable."
Douglas is also comfortable with
his mother's heritage, spending a lot of
time at the hotel he owns in Bermuda,
where his mother's family comes from.
"I'm having fun becoming a hotelier,"
he smiles.
While leaving Hollywood and par-
ing down his production company,
Douglas is enjoying his acting career.
He will next be seen in a World War
II movie, U571, directed by Jonathan
Mostow.
"I get to play the commander of a
submarine," he reports. "It's nice to look
forward to being a hero." ❑
