Families...
set out all the goodies for the
evening's shalom zachor (baby-wel-
coming celebration).
The following morning, Devora,
Ruchi and Esther Leah took all the
cakes and cookies to shut and set up
the kiddush for Yitzi's bris after Shab-
bat morning services. Meanwhile,
10-year-old Yehudit from down the
street dressed Sara and Yehuda.
Seven months later, the same house-
hold was full of bereavement. Just
days before Pesach, my father
passed away in America, and I sat
shiva during the final frenzy of
Pesach preparations.
In addition to the meals during
shiva and the complete seder dinner
the neighbors sent in, it was their chil-
dren who helped make the Pesach
truly kosher. Once again, sisters
Chani, Devora, Ruchi and Esther
Leah took over babysitting duties.
Then Esther Leah and Devora
returned to help clean. They
scrubbed high chairs and kitchen
chairs and food-encrusted toys, pol-
ished furniture and silver, and made
the now kosher-for-Pesach apartment
shine.
Another neighbor sent over 8-year-
old Ella, who folded the mountains of
clean laundry piled around the apart-
ment. "I want to develop her talents,"
Ella's mother explained when she sent
her over for a second day. Yet anoth-
er neighbor sent over her teenaged
son, Elazar, who enthusiastically
gave the tile floors their final Pesach
cleaning.
Elazar's younger sister, Elisheva,
took the children to the park while my
husband readied the apartment for
the seder. Other children appeared
and offered their help. But, surprising-
ly, there was nothing left to do!
It is written in Pirkei Avot (1:2), "The
world stands on three things: On the
Torah, on worship, and on acts of
kindness." The world's news may
constantly be filled these days with
stories of nightmarish acts committed
by children, but it is through the merit
of people such as the children in our
neighborhood that the world exists. ❑
