Yehudit or Tzipora, their parents will
feel that they have reared offspring
who, in time, might make the world
a better place in which to live.
The above-mentioned children are
among the many in our community
who are being raised to do gemilut
chasadim — acts of loving kindness
— even from an early age.
Residents of our neighborhood, vet-
eran Israelis and immigrants alike,
have long agreed that the community,
like so many others throughout Israel,
offers an excellent, organized support
system during times of need. Along
, with the organized communal frame-
: work, however, are the spontaneous
acts of chesed (kindness) directed
toward families and individuals who
require help due to unusual circum-
stances. And children often pitch in to
help enthusiastically.
When Yitzi made his appearance
into the world on the Shabbat before
Rosh Hashanah, 13-year-old Devora,
12-year-old Ruchi and 10-year-old
Esther Leah appeared miraculously
the following Friday, Rosh Hashanah
afternoon. They offered to babysit,
just as two exhausted parents were
trying to garner their last vestiges of
energy to cope with three simultane-
ously howling children. The girls took
Yehuda and Sara next door to play
while their parents slept. Devora and
her good friend, Tzipora, then
returned to clean up the kitchen and
