Tickling Isn't Funny,
Psychologist Says

.

tickle may elicit a giggle.
But tickling isn't really
funny to the person being
tickled, a University of
California at San Diego psychologist
says.
Just remember the squirming
that goes on as the ticklee tries to
get away. In fact, most people
report feelings of anxiety associated
with tickling, says Nicholas Chris-
tenfeld.
He and graduate student Chris-
tine Harris set about trying to
understand the emotional content of
tickling.
Being tickled prompts a sort of
reflex action, often accompanied with
laughter or apparent mirthfulness.
People sometimes assume mirth is the
underlying emotion, because people
often smile or laugh when tickled,
Christenfeld said.
The emotional content of tickling
has engaged some great minds of his-
tory: Francis Bacon, Socrates, even
Charles Darwin.
Mirth, Christenfeld has shown, is
not part of the response.
In an experiment, undergraduate
students were tickled before and
after watching funny films.
Researchers looked for a "warm-up"
effect, but seeing the films didn't
make the tickling response seem
more intense.
Tickling and mirth do not share
the same underlying emotion, the
researchers concluded in work pub-
lished in the journal Cognition and
Emotion.
"People don't ask to be tickled
when they want to be amused,"
Christenfeld said.
In another exercise, students were
shown a noisy robotic arm and were
told they would be tickled by it. The
robot was turned on, but, unknown
to the blindfolded participants, a
human hand from under a table did
the tickling instead. People got all
squirmy and giggly even though they
thought they were tickled by the
robot.
"Basically, there was no effect of
the social situation," said Harris, who
developed the project.
So why do humans have a tickle
feature?
"I'm not sure why it is," Christen-
feld said. "It's still a mystery."
Tickling is the latest fodder for
Christenfeld, who seizes upon topics
