Over the years, the focus of Boyk's
work has become healing — which
she distinguishes from curing. She
regards curing as the absence of phys-
ical symptoms or emotional pain.
Healing is a shift in how a person
perceives the problem.
"There is healing when someone
who's terminally ill makes peace with
/—amily members and an impending
death," she said. "There can be heal-
ing with or without cure."
For Boyk, healing leads to whole-
ness or healthy relationships with the
rest of the world — other people,
work, community, the earth. "From
there, it's a simple slide to holiness,
the awareness of and honoring the
\ 51essing of life, of being here," she
said.

Grant. Sitting in a grove of trees or
surrounded by tall brick walls, for
example, is safer than resting in the
dense shade of a lone tree in a field.
Remember, UVB exposure is a
year-round hazard. Green summer
grass reflects about 5 percent of the
rays, whereas snow on a sunny winter
day reflects up to 95 percent of the
rays reaching it.
UVB is one of two types of ultra-
violet light hitting Earth's surface.
UVA is the kind that will give a gold-
en tan but cause little harm to plants
or animals. But shorter-wavelength
UVB can damage plant tissue and
cause cancer in humans.
So don't forget the sunscreen, even
if you plan to stay in the shade.

San Diego (CNS) — If you think
sitting in the shade will protect you
f rom cancer-causing ultraviolet-B
light, you're fried. According to
Purdue University's Richard Grant,
UVB is not visible to the naked eye,
which leads people to underesti-
mate their exposure to the danger-
ous rays.
"When people in the shade esti-
mate UVB exposure based on an eye-
\ ball assessment, they're getting about
/—twice as much UVB as they think,"
he explains.
That's because, unlike visible
light, UVB doesn't shine down in a
straight line from the sun. Instead, it
bounces around in the atmosphere,
so it can easily reach unsuspecting
folks sitting in the shade. A better
gauge of UVB is exposure is how
much sky you can see.
"If lots of sky is obstructed,
you're getting a lot less UVB," says

Infants and toddlers, who already
must put up with a series of immu-
nizations by injection, may be sub-
jected to yet more shots.
Children currently get a series of
four oral vaccines to protect them
from polio, but the Centers for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention now say
an injected vaccine of inactive polio is
safer. The oral vaccine contains live
microorganisms that cause eight to
10 cases of polio each year in the
United States. The injected vaccine,
which has inactive organisms, is
equally effective in preventing the
disease - with no risk of causing
polio.
But the injected vaccine is more
expensive than its oral counter-
part, and some parents may be
reluctant to subject their chil-
dren to more injections.
"You have to weigh the
pain of a shot against the real but
minuscule chance of getting vaccine-
associated polio," says Dr. Margaret
Fisher, of St. Christopher's Hospital
for Children in Philadelphia.
Fisher predicts the new polio vac-
cine will eventually be combined
with the diphtheria-pertussis-
tetanus cocktail currently on kids'
immunization schedules. Health poli-
cy experts are divided over whether
children should have all four doses
orally or by injection, or if they can
get two doses orally and two by injec-
tion. The American Academy of Pedi-
atrics urges pediatricians to present
the options to parents and let them
decide.
