/\1D Shaare Zedek Medical Center sur-
vives on the contributions of
American Jews, many of whose own
children would be refused services in
the fertility clinic, Chafets pointed
out.
He told the audience they should
be extremely careful about where their
contributions to Israel are going and
\_ not be afraid to askquestions.
Chafets reminded his listeners that
Reform Judaism is not accepted by
Orthodox rabbis in Israel and "they
don't see your rabbi as a rabbi and
they don't see you as a Jew."
Chafets grew up in Pontiac and
attended the University of Michigan.
Upon graduating in 1969, he moved
to Israel permanently and was
appointed director of the government
press office by newly elected Prime
Minister Menachem Begin.
He is a columnist for the Jerusalem
Report and comments frequently on
ABC, CBS, CNN and National
Public Radio. His non-fiction works
include Double Vision, a National
Jewish Book Award nominee; Devil's
Night and Heroes and Hustlers,
\_n
Hardhats and Holy Men, both named
Notable Book of the Year by the New
York Times Book Review.
Chafets recalled his initial response
to the Orthodox 31 years ago: "I saw
guys in black hats and long coats and
thought, 'Those are the real Jews.' I
only attended Hebrew school once a
week and these guys spend their time
learning Talmud in yeshivas.
"Thirty-one years later, I have
learned that we are not lesser Jews
than they are. Our rabbis may know
less Talmud, but they know a lot more
about making Judaism work in a
modern, pluralistic society." ❑
