ith raptors and griffin
vultures flying over-
head, the vulcanized
land of the Gamla will
provide a dramatic introduction to
the Middle East when nature enthusi-
asts embark on an intensive sightsee-
ing and hiking adventure in Novem-
ber.
Led by Israeli guides, the nature
trip through the Galilee, Golan,
Jerusalem and the Negev offers an
opportunity to explore the natural
beauty of the Holy Land with stays in
kibbutz hotels.
The trip is open to everybody, said
Lisa Boose of West Bloomfield, group
sales manager at Southfield-based
Doneson World Class Travel. "It's not
the health/fitness thing that people
are interested in. It's definitely hands-
on. It fills the adventure/eco tourist
niche."
The Israeli Nature Trip, scheduled
for Nov. 1-13, is sponsored by West
Bloomfield Parks and Recreation and
Doneson in cooperation with the
Israeli Ministry of Tourism, the Soci-
ety for the Protection of Nature in
Israel (SPNI) and El-Al Israel Air-
lines.
Jonathan Schechter, park
ranger/naturalist for West Bloomfield
Parks and Recreation, will serve the 35
explorers as an escort. A participant in
SPNI-sponsored programs in Jordan
and Egypt, Schechter has traveled to
Israel six times in the last 13 years.
"The biggest thing I've noticed is

that people are unaware of the nature,
wildlife and parks of Israel," said
Schechter. "We'll still see the major
historical and traditional sites, but
people will be amazed at what they
missed in the air-conditioned buses
going through the desert at 60 miles
per hour."
The nature-oriented tour begins
with an overnight stay in Tel Aviv.
The group then spends the first day
traveling along the Sea of Galilee to
the _nesting sites of the rare griffin
vulture in Gamla before hiking down
„.Th
basalt canyons.
Next comes a tour of the Crusader
fortress at Ka'Alat Nimrod overlook-
ing the Hula Valley. The route along
the streams of the Banias Nature
Reserve culminates with a spectacular
view of the Banias Waterfall. A Druze
village will provide Middle East hos-
pitality.
A walk through the lush green
Mediterranean flora of the western
Galilee gorges will contrast the fol-
lowing day as the group heads to
Makhtesh Katan for a hike in the
desert. At Shacharut, there will be an
afternoon camel tour and an
overnight camping experience out-
doors.
The next day begins with a hike
up the Red Canyon for a scenic view c /\
of Sinai from Mt. Hezkiah. Activities
continue with swimming and snor-
keling in the Red Sea.
Canyons formed from multi-col-
ored sand and fossils will be seen at
the Timna and Ramon craters and
Ein Shacharut. After touring Avdat, a
Nabatean city dating back to the sec-
