is such a common
condition that the mere cap-
tion of.Z7z2-zz, in the Sunday
comics is enough for us to
recognize that Dagwood is asleep.
Most of us know someone who
snores, but the noise or the frequency
doesn't always mean a sleepless night.
Often an easy target for ridicule, we
laugh and make jokes about snoring,
listening to couples tell about their
signals for letting their bed partner
know it's time to roll over.
Katy Jacob of Birmingham, for
example, finds that nudging husband
Steve in the leg is usually enough to
stop his snoring without waking him.
According to the National Com-
mission on Sleep Disorders, 45 per-
cent of normal adults snore at least
occasionally, and 25 percent are
habitual snorers. To help these mil-

Many doctors say that if some of
these devices stop people from snor-
ing, it's probably because they're
keeping them awake!
"Barry doesn't really snore," says
Marsha Auster of West Bloomfield
about her husband. "He makes this
puffing noise, and it's only when he's
really tired after long days at the hos-
pital and office. He can sleep through
anything, but I can't, so I give him a
slight shove in bed and whisper loud-
ly, 'Stop it.' That usually works."
Snoring noise is produced when a
person breathes (usually breathing in)
during sleep and there's an obstruc-
tion to the free flow of air through
the passages at the back of the mouth
and nose. This area is the collapsible
part of the airway where the tongue
and upper throat meet the soft palate
and uvula, that thing that hangs
down in the back of the throat.
"Snoring is not a disease but it can
be a symptom of a more serious con-
dition," explains Dr. Michael Rontal,
an otolaryngologist.
"Simple snoring, without sleep
apnea, is noisy breathing during

lions of people deal with their snoring
problem, ingenious entrepreneurs and
health professionals have registered
more than 300 devices at the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office as cures
for snoring.
These include contraptions that
force the snorer to sleep on his side
(snoring is often worse when a person
sleeps on his back). Others reposition
the lower jaw, some open nasal pas-
sages, and a few produce unpleasant
stimuli when snoring occurs.

sleep, usually just an annoyance to
the other people in the bedroom or in
the house. One of my patients knew
he had a problem when he got all
those dirty looks first thing in the
morning at a camp site."
According to Dr. Rontal, people
who snore may have poor muscle
tone in the tongue and throat that
occurs because their muscles are too
relaxed. This can happen when some-
one has too much alcohol or when
