Sidney Finkel, a child survivor of the
Piotrkow ghetto, the first ghetto in
Poland, told of his family's experiences
and showed a video commemorating cit-
izens Piotrkow who lost their lives in the
/- Shoah.

turned into a paper sculpture.
Designed and created by Laurence
Biederman, titled Culture Lost, it will
become part of the permanent collec-
tion at the Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter in West Bloomfield.
Recollections featured a video mon-
tage by Howard Morris, "A Culture
Lost," which began with photographs
of life and families in pre-war Europe,
continued with photographs from the
era of Hider's rise to power and con-
cluded with photographs from the
Shoah itself.
Two of the temple's young congre-
gants, Diana Lawrence and Joshua
Palay, had their work showcased.
Diana read her essay, "We Were Slaves
in Egypt." Ann Zibelman Rose per-
formed the world premiere of Palay's
composition Constant.
Mid-performance, the Olga Bodek
Hern Memorial Holocaust Essay
Awards were presented to three Ann
Arbor Pioneer High School students:
Christopher Gravelyn, Michael Burns
and Yolanda Doster. The Hern Awards
are presented for essays describing the
effects of Holocaust education on the
individual student and on the larger
community.
Readings also included poetry and
personal reflections. The closing read-
ing was an excerpt from Kenneth
Wachsberger's The Last Selection: A
Child's Journey Through The Holocaust,
describing one girl's experiences being
part of Mengele's last selection from
the Shoah and her surviving that expe-
rience due to imminent emancipation
of the camps.
The event ended with singing by
Shir Chadash, Temple Beth Emeth's
middle and high school choir, led by
Ann Zibelman Rose.
