izza is still king there ... And,
justly so, what with the
many awards it has received
through the years.
However, things have become
increasingly "difficult" at Buddy's
Pizza's six locations in metropolitan
Detroit.
Are they restaurants or pizzerias? ...
As the name on their sign now says,
Buddy's is both.
The emphasis always will be on its
award-winning pizzas, but Buddy's
full-service restaurant connotation is
not very far behind.
Back in 1946, at its first location
on Conant and Six Mile, still operated
for Billy, Shirley and Robert Jacobs by
Irving Sosnick, all it had was square,
deep-dish pizza and six toppings to go
with the cheese, a couple of salads,
two pastas, minestrone soup and some
sandwiches.
Today, at the Buddy's Restaurant
and Pizzeria on Northwestern High-
way and Middlebelt, those pizzas
come with 24 toppings.
And the constantly growing menu
now has barbecued baby-back ribs
with a delicious sauce basted on ...
plus Buddy's seven homemade pastas
that can also be gotten with sauteed
mushrooms, chargrilled chicken,
homemade meatballs or crumbled
Italian sausage; three homemade, full-
bodied soups (the minestrone gives
Italian eateries a run for their money,
plus cream of broccoli and the new
chunky vegetable), eight appetizers
(from mushrooms to chicken tenders
to meatballs baked with four cheeses,
etc.), eight sandwiches, plus four
burgers and four salads.
Buddy's is farther out of the pizze-
ria classification with desserts like
Sanders hot fudge cream puff, freshly
baked pies, cookies and brownies.
Even theparty space has increased
at Buddy's on Northwestern, although
it has been there from the beginning
in March of 1982 ... Everybody knew
about the room in back of the restau-
rant ... But few realized that the front
part, its large cocktail lounge area, is
also available for parties.
