Prime Ministers

DAVID BEN-GURION (1886-1973)

The look A

half-halo of hair.

The life: Born
David Green in
Plontz, Poland,
then part of Rus-
sia. Became
involved in the Zionist movement while
still in his teens. He adopted the name
"Ben-Gurion" — "son of lion cub" in
Hebrew — while working as a journal-
ist in Jerusalem. (Later in life, he was
known as "Hazaken" — "The Old
Man.") Always active in politics, he
helped form the Mapai, a union of
Palestine's labor parties, and served as
chairman of Zionism's executive body,
the Jewish Agency. When Great Britain
gave up the Palestine mandate, it was
Ben-Gurion who announced the forma-
tion of the State of Israel on May 14,
1948.

The career: Flinty and often mercurial,

Afterward: After his final — and
accepted — resignation in 1963, he
gradually turned to scholarly pursuits,
including the writing of 1971's Israel: A
Personal History. He died in 1973, per-
haps more loved in his declining years
than when he was helping to create a
bright new nation.

minister during
David Ben-Guri-
on's temporary
retirement in
1954-55. When
Ben-Gurion
returned, Sharrett
went back to his
former duties, but
resigned in 1956
over policy disagreements. That same
year he became the head of the World
Zionist Executive.

The look A joyful, dapper small-town
banker.

The life: Formerly Moshe Shertok, he
was elected secretary of the Jewish
Agency's political department in 1933,
and was responsible for maintaining
contact with the ruling British authori-
ties. Upon the founding of the State of
Israel, Sharrett became its first foreign
minister; he had laid the groundwork
for his department by training several
men in diplomacy and foreign affairs
while still with the Jewish Agency.

he served as the first prime minister of
Israel for the next 15 years, except for a
short period in 1954-55. His years as
Israeli leader were marked by two wars,
in 1948 and 1956, and constant politi-
cal bickering. (At the time of the 1948
Arab-Israeli War, there was a possibility
the country would be rent by civil war
as well.) As the head of several coalition
governments, Ben-Gurion often found
himself at loggerheads with his col-
leagues as well as his opponents, at
which time he would threaten to resign,
retire to his residence at Sde Boker in
the Negev Desert, and wait. His will
almost always won out, and it was he,
perhaps more than any person, who
forged the country.
