Through all the Tears, Struggle and Joy, We Proudly Salute Israel's 50th Birthday Prime Ministers DAVID BEN-GURION (1886-1973) The look A slightly sour Yoda with a startling half-halo of hair. The life: Born David Green in Plontz, Poland, then part of Rus- sia. Became involved in the Zionist movement while still in his teens. He adopted the name "Ben-Gurion" — "son of lion cub" in Hebrew — while working as a journal- ist in Jerusalem. (Later in life, he was known as "Hazaken" — "The Old Man.") Always active in politics, he helped form the Mapai, a union of Palestine's labor parties, and served as chairman of Zionism's executive body, the Jewish Agency. When Great Britain gave up the Palestine mandate, it was Ben-Gurion who announced the forma- tion of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. The career: Flinty and often mercurial, Afterward: After his final — and accepted — resignation in 1963, he gradually turned to scholarly pursuits, including the writing of 1971's Israel: A Personal History. He died in 1973, per- haps more loved in his declining years than when he was helping to create a bright new nation. His years as Israeli leader were marked by two wars, in 1948 and 1956, and constant politi- cal bickering. (At the time of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, there was a possibility the country would be rent by civil war as well.) As the head of several coalition governments, Ben-Gurion often found himself at loggerheads with his col- leagues as well as his opponents, at which time he would threaten to resign, retire to his residence at Sde Boker in the Negev Desert, and wait. His will almost always won out, and it was he, perhaps more than any person, who forged the country.
