when. I feel lethargic, I know my
Kapha is out of balance. I work on
This with exercise and certain spicy
foods to bring increased stimulation. If
a baby was in this same situation,
you might see whether he's getting
enough stimulation, perhaps change
his daily activities.

In your book you also speak
of the value of meditation.
But can small children really
do this?
A: The idea is to get them started
with good habits when they're
young, so as they age they'll under-
stand about centering — plus, medi-
tation is very helpful for stress. Maybe
they can't meditate, but you can
begin with five minutes of silence,
help them to learn how to quiet them-
selves. If the parent meditates, the
child will want to, as well, because
children love to emulate their parents.

Although your book is specif-
ically directed at new moth-
ers, it's really useful for any-
one, isn't it?
A: Yes, in fact I begin my day with
[Ayurvedic techniques including] a
self-body massage, meditation and
some yoga stretches. You can do the
whole thing in less than 20 minutes.
I've been studying Kabbalah :7 Los
Angeles, where a rabbi suggested I
meditate on the word "shalom," par-
ticularly with the "om" at the end. I
have a special place in my room
where I meditate, with candles and
incense.
