ter and her friends, and I knew from
their eyes, and probably they from
mine, where the word "terror"ism
comes from. The comfort of seeing
the girls safe turned to a feeling of
panic and alarm as they told us that
the day before, at the exact time and
place of the bombing, their group
had made an unplanned lunch stop
for falafel.
Later, on the news, we saw a man
whose market stand was destroyed by
the bomb. The day before, he had
given the girls directions.
The American in me was packing
to go home. The Israeli that was
always in my daughter was telling me
how the marketplace would be
repaired, the damage would be
cleared away, and the stands would
be open for business by the next
morning.
And as I watched the funerals of
innocent Israelis on TV, and as I
thanked God for the safety of our
children, I studied my daughter's
reaction. She grieved for those who
died, but she also spoke of the
importance of life continuing on, and
how the Israelis don't let anything
stop them.
The Israeli in her felt the need to
.
go to the marketplace and be among
those to show the terrorists that
Israelis don't give in. The American
parent in me told her, "You can't go."
My trip to Israel was unforget-
table, perhaps more so than other
trips, even more than my first. But,
after a couple of days back home, of
sleeping the wrong hours, and enjoy
ing the videos and pictures we had
taken, I settled into ryzy American
life, content with my memories and
the knowledge that I will visit again.
Many, many of us who travel to
Israel come home feeling an incredi-
ble affiliation with the country and
with the Israeli people. Most of us
truly want to go back. But some of us
return to our cities and our houses al
and say, "I want to go home to
Israel." I see this in my daughter, in
fact in both of my daughters. I saw it
this past Saturday when they walked
the six-mile round trip to shul and
back in search of the companionship
of others who were also walking and
enjoying Shabbat.
I saw my elder daughter's reaction
when she told me how she reached ino
her hand toward the door frame of a
Southfield store, only to realize that
there was no mezuzah there. In Israel
