presents
they are everywhere, in hotels, restau-
rants, even on the entrance to the
airport.
The connection she feels goes
beyond that of a teen having an
amazing summer with wonderful
friends. She says she needs to be
there, and feels that she belongs in
-the place where being Jewish and liv-
ing Jewish is the most predominant
and significant thing that there is.
I think about the constant worry I
have for those living in Israel. I know
about the required security rooms
that are built into all new homes. I
think about how my aunt, with three
grandchildren in the Israeli army,
told a friend whose first grandson
- was drafted: "Welcome to my night-
mare."
I look at my cousins, whom I met
for the first time four years ago when
they were children, and I see a 2 1
year old officer, and a 19-year-old
with the face of a 12-year-old angel,
running to catch a train in her full
uniform, carrying a gun that for
some curious reason we all wanted to
hold before she left.
The American parent in me speaks
to my child of fear for her safety, of
not wanting her to live thousands of
miles away, and I tell her that we live
in a large, close Jewish community
with shuls and schools and camps to
help fill her need.
And although she hears me, she
knows better, and I watch her as she
/ sits with her college brochures and
applications, and I know that on the
very top of a pile that has accumulat-
ed for over a year is the only packet
that came with non-American
postage on it, the one that says,
"Nativ College Leadership Program,
Jerusalem, Israel. E.
