term consequences range from inhibit-
ed growth to gastrointestinal prob-
lems. Young female athletes face the
added risk of losing bone mineral
mass, which can lead to osteoporosis
later in life.
Parents can spot the tell-tale signs
of a teen trying to drop excess pounds
in a hurry, including:
• Dramatic weight change.
• Prolonged weakness.
• Vomiting or frequent trips to the
bathroom after eating.
• Dental problems, which may
result from excessive vomiting.
• Diarrhea.
• An obsession with exercise.

Epilepsy Is
Not So Dramatic

People typically associate epilepsy with
dramatic grand mal seizures, but Dr.
Jonathan Licht, of the Center for
Neurologic Study, says the neurologi-
cal disorder often manifests itself in
more subtle ways.
"Most people believe that an
epileptic seizure causes a person to

stiffen, drop to the floor and undergo
convulsions," he says. "In actuality,
this type of seizure afflicts a small per-
centage of the epileptic population.
More than two-thirds of people with
epilepsy do not exhibit such). dramat-

Symptoms of these more common
"partial" seizures include stomach dis-
comfort, tingling in a finger that trav-
els to the arm, sudden jerking of a fin-
ger or wrist that only lasts a few sec-
onds, a sudden anxiety attack and
repetitive movements, such as mouth
chewing, hair brushing or pulling
clothes.
Some people experience a precursor
of a coming seizure known as an aura.
A sudden change in body temperature,
an unpleasant taste or odor, anxiety or
a feeling of deja vu could be signs of
an impending seizure. ❑

Help our community's children realize that we all have the potential to be Jewish
heroes by encouraging them to identify a Jewish hero in their lives.

Guidelines:

• Open to children of all grades
• Submit a short paragraph naming your Jewish hero and explaining why you consider
him/her to be a hero
(ie. the impact he/she has made on your life, the values and attributes which this person lives by)
• The Jewish hero can be someone that you know personally (parent, grandparent, teacher, etc.)
or someone, past or present, that you have learned about (Albert Einstein, Golda Meir,
Steven Spielberg, etc.)
• Include phone no. and photo of hero (if hero is from one's own life)
• Submission deadline April 30, 1998
