The Best Of Everything
Some traditional favorites from a delicatessen legend.
A
new look is bringing even
greater life to an already
successful operation that
has been going strong since
1978.
Has nothing to do with the decor,
although there is quite a difference
from the first days when it took over a
1,600-square-foot bagel-and-brunch
store and added cheeses, smoked fish
and lox, corned beef, turkey, roast
beef, etc.
But it remained basically a bagel
operation, making its own.
Come June of this year, Bagel Deli,
corner of Maple and Farmington
roads in West Bloomfield, will cele-
brate its 20th anniversary.
The addition of cooking prepara-
tions by Rose Guttman, former owner
with her late husband, Irving
Guttman, of the highly popular Irv-
ing's Delicatessen-Restaurant, has pre-
sented still another dimension to its
successful format.
In 1983, Bagel Deli was expanded
to 3,200 square feet ... chock full of
produce and grocery items.
Most of the latter has been elimi-
nated ... And as recently as last May,
owner Harvey Cohen put in two
counters in front as a convenience
spot for folks to stand while eating a
sandwich made by his personnel.
It was so successful that he saw the
need for having tables and chairs, four
of which were added this past Decem-
ber ... In January, two more tables
appeared and Bagel Deli now accom-
modates about 24 people plus seven at
the counters.
How did Rose come into the pic-
ture? ... She was on one of her visits to
the store to see Marie Parish behind
the counter; Marie worked for Rose
and Irving at the former Original Irv-
ing's on Greenfield and 11 Mile, and
in La Mirage Mall on Northwestern
Highway.
Marie introduced Rose to Harvey
and it was to be the start of highly
received business togetherness .. Rose
suggested things she could make for
the store and Harvey said he'd like to
try them.
The items she made took off like a
souped-up engine and she has contin-
ually added those specialties she used
to serve at Irving's.
