They discovered that individual
neurons appear to retain the raw
material of memory long after any
conscious recollection of it has faded.
They also determined that the physi-
cal anatomy of memory varies dramat-
ically depending on the kind of recol-
ctions involved.
Personal memories of everyday
events and short-term working memo-
ries, like a phone number, are stored
in one place, the memory of words in
another, while the memory of objects
in yet another. The brain's ability to
learn something new is differentiated

"I'm writing these stories for me
so that there's no correct or incor-
rect way to tell the story because
other people will remember the
events differently than I do,"
explains Gig.
"I became interested in mem-
oirs-when my mother died and I
was leafing through an old phow
album and saw a photo of tray
great-grandmother for whom I was
named, and realized I knew noth-
ing, about her. My mother was one
of six children, but no one is really
around that can tell me much
about my great-grandmother.
"So I'm writing stories about
my life, about what I remember
about growing up, about my
mother, and what life was like in
this area 40 years ago."
