Personal memories of everyday events and short-term working memo- ries, like a phone number, are stored in one place, the memory of words in another, while the memory of objects in yet another. The brain's ability to learn something new is differentiated from its ability to retrieve memories previously learned. However, the circuits that control memory wear down as a person ages. Certain aspects of memory hold up quite well: general knowledge of the world and the verbal ability to convey that knowledge.
