the word. Like an adolescent sporting
face paint and a Mohawk, Bern will
do anything to make himself noticed
— ape Bob Dylan, make fun of Kurt
Cobain, even use the "n" word if he
feels like it.
More impressively, Bern knows
what to do once he's grabbed your
attention. His caustic wit and keen
political insights help him create
mature, meaningful folk songs that
will make you burst out in laughter.
You may even ponder eternity along
the way.
His self-titled debut album is a
strong document, but if you want to
hear the best Bern has to offer, check
out his six-song EP, Dog Boy Van. It
captures his wise-guy-with-acoustic-
guitar schtick perfectly.
Bern's "Kurt" opens with all the
subtlety and gentility of a train
wreck. "When Kurt Cobain blew out
his brain," he begins, "All the little
girls they cried like rain/And as for
me I felt the pain/But I got no T-
shirts left to stain." Ha ha.

But after making a mockery of the
former Nirvana singer/songwriter's
suicide, Bern reaches for — and
grabs hold of — some serious obser-
vations about mythmaking and mar-
tyrdom. Rather than belittling
those who cried when Cobain died,
Bern draws a parallel between the
grunge rocker and various Kennedys,
Joan of Arc and Jesse James.
His point? Cobain mattered if
people believed he mattered, and the
tears they cried mattered, too.
Of course, there isn't always a seri-
ous undercurrent to his songs. On
the surface, his "Jerusalem" might
seem like a snide, tongue-in-cheek
statement of purpose from a hyperac-
tive undergraduate. And that's
because it is. "I am the messiah," he
yells at one point, "Yes, I think you
heard me right/I am the messiah."
