FYI: Antelope once ran wild
throughout the Land of
Israel.
You would be hard-pressed to find
any antelope wandering the streets
of Jerusalem these days (in fact,
the only places antelope can be
found today — outside zoos —
are the Arabian Peninsula and
Africa). Yet in ancient times numer-
ous species of the animal could be
found in Israel.

FYI: Real Bacon and kosher.

One of Israel's leading artists in
the earlier part of this century was
Yehuda Bacon. Born in 1929 in
Czechoslovakia, he spent his youth
in Nazi death camps. He was lib-
erated from Mauthausen in 1945.
In 1946 he settled in Israel, where
he attended the Bezalel Art Acade-
my. His paintings and drawings
often focused on the Holocaust,
but at the same time revealed a
hope in the goodness of humanity.
Bacon served as a witness against
Adolf Eichmann at his trial in
Jerusalem.

FYI: You mean eight days
of matzah wasn't enough?
Most families have had about all
the matzoh they want for awhile
after Pesach — but not Moroccan
Jews. Many Moroccan Jews have
a custom of extending the holiday
for one more day. The extra day
becomes a holiday called Maimu-
no. In Israel, you can still see

some Moroccan families participat-
ing in the celebration. They wear
bright vests and robes and meet
for a picnic, complete with songs
and dance.

FYI: You'll be bowled over
by this...
The first woman to bowl three per-
fect games in a professional compe-
tition was Sylvia Wene. In 1955,
and from 1959 1962, Wene was
a member of the All-America team.
In 1955 she was named Women's
Bowler of the Year.

FYI: Listen up, members of
the Flat Earth Society.
You might think Christopher Colum-
bus had a lot on the ball (specifi-
cally a very big one — the Earth)
when he went sailing with no fear
of falling off the side of the world.
In fact, though, more than 200
years before Columbus was even
born, Rabbi Moses de Leon wrote
in the Zohar that the world is
round, and that it revolves. And in
case you're wondering, the Flat
Earth Society really does exist. Its
members continue to disregard
Rabbi de Leon and Columbus and
everyone else since; they actually
insist the Earth is flat.

FYI: In whatever language
you say it...
The Torah has been translated into
more than 1,000 languages.
Some of the most unusual and
interesting include Mohawk and
Chippewa. ❑
